Drive-In Movies

Drive-In Movies

Question- How do you watch a new movie in theaters with a toddler/young child without feeling like you're disturbing those next to you? (I mean who really cares if you are, but it always gives me anxiety)

Answer- Go to the Drive-In Movies!

This was one of the first tips that I received from another parent when my daughter was starting to be old enough to sit through a movie. We are so lucky that in the Bay Area we have one of sixteen drive-ins that are still open in California. Westwind Capitol Drive-In has six screens, and is a fun throwback to the way things used to be (even though they show current movies)!

Tickets are amazingly cheap (General admission is $8.25, kids 5-11 are $1.75, and kids 4 and under are free!) and you can bring in your own food, though they do have a super cute retro snack bar. They also have a playground to burn off some energy before the movie. My daughter thinks it's SO cool to sit in the front seat (I usually have to have some type of booster seat for her since she's so little).

I personally love going to the drive-in because my daughter can ask as many questions as she wants without disturbing other patrons, or in the case of Frozen 2, she can sing at the top of her lungs with no judgy glares. If she falls asleep, all I need to do is put her back in her car seat and enjoy my snacks. Also, with the current coronavirus scare, I'm not mad that it's just the two of us in the car and we aren't really in contact with others.

Quick Tip: Make sure you know how to operate your headlights because you don't want them shining at the screen (they will make it hard to see for you and for others). Also, if it's warm out and you have an SUV or hatchback, you can park backward and set up the back of your car like a comfy couch to snuggle up and watch the movie! I've even seen people bring beach chairs and sit by their car to watch the movie, which sounds like a great idea on a summer night.
