This is one of our favorite parks in the Bay Area! There is so much to do, plenty of space to run, and FREE parking. Emma Prusch Farm Park is an oasis in the middle of a fairly busy part of the City of San Jose. You wouldn't know that it was there until you stumbled upon it.
There is a great playground for all ages, where we make sure to spend lots of time getting our energy out! The large playground is shaped like a barn, and has two slides and plenty of bridges to run across. The smaller playground is shaped like a tractor and has two wheels for kids to turn and the smallest slide I've ever seen in my life. It's perfect for new walkers through about age two and a half.
The best part of this park is the animal area. They have many types of birds (ducks, chickens, roosters, peacocks, and more), bunnies, pigs, and even sheep to look at. Make sure to bring a couple of quarters, because you can purchase food for the sheep and the kids get a kick out of feeding them. The bunnies are in a cage, so you can't pet them, and they have warnings not to feed the pig because she bites. One note- the chickens, roosters, and ducks are free roaming. You may see them in the parking lot when you pull in. If your child is afraid of animals, just be aware of this before going.
There is also a large barn where local 4H members house their animals. We have seen pigs, goats and cows in there during our visits.
The City of San Jose Parks and Recreation department offers programs at the park (some are free, some have a minimal fee). Farm Fables is geared toward preschool age children and talks about farm animals through childhood stories. Farm Science explains they 'why' of farming, like why roosters crow, why farmers grow plants in rows, and more. Goodnight Farm offers a night walk through the farm, an opportunity to meet farm animals, and a bonfire/s'mores experience. Feed the Farm Animals offers kids the opportunity to help the Emma Prusch Farm Park staff with feeding the animals before the area is open to the public. You can register for these programs at the office or at www.sjregistration.com.
On Saturdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, there is also a farm stand called Veggielution, where you can purchase produce that is grown on site.
