Local Theatre
I will admit it, I'm a musical theatre nerd. If I could listen to Broadway soundtracks all day, I would. My daughter can belt out You Can't Stop the Beat from Hairspray without even thinking. One of my favorite ways to share my love of theatre with my daughter is to bring her to shows around the Bay Area. There are so many amazing options to choose from, but when you want a more affordable choice, children's theatre companies are the way to go!
We have seen a few Starting Arts shows that a family member was in (Annie, Seussical the Musical, and Elf), which were always so fun and really affordable for the great production value. These are usually associated with a school, but they also have stand alone productions.
We also attended the My First Nutcracker show at the Hammer Theatre at San Jose State University. This was a fun introduction to ballet, because it was only the first act of the Nutcracker, and they told the story beforehand so that the kids would know what was going on. The photos and videos in this post are from that trip.
We're planning to go see Uni the Unicorn, A Musical Adventure when it comes to Sunnyvale in May/June as our next theatre adventure.
There are so many children's theatre companies in the bay area, and most of them are very affordable. In the South Bay, Children's Musical Theater of San Jose is very popular. Peninsula Youth Theatre is another great group that does workshops for kids as well. San Carlos Children's Theatre also offers courses, but does stage productions that are popular with kids. Musical Theatre Works is a group in San Francisco that puts on great shows as well!
Have you ever attempted to take your child to a show? If so, how did it go? If not, what's stopping you?
