Redwood Grove Nature Preserve
In the City of Los Altos, hidden behind a residential street, is a beautiful 6-acre redwood forest that you would never guess was there. It has raised wooden boardwalks throughout much of the preserve. During the spring and summer, you can find kids playing in Adobe Creek, which runs right through the center of the park.
What I particularly love about Redwood Grove is that it is a less intimidating version of some of the amazing National or State Parks that we have in the area. If you want to test out hiking or nature in general with your young toddlers, this is the place to do it. This is definitely not a traditional hike, it's very short, but it's a great first step toward longer hikes. There is easy (free) street parking, and it's just a short walk down to the park. Much of the park is flat, so you could definitely get away with a stroller with a younger child.
My family and I decided to do a photoshoot for our holiday cards at Redwood grove last fall, and these photos are some of our favorites. There are so many beautiful places to take photos (very Instagrammable) and the light that shines through the trees at certain times of the day is pure magic. It stays nice and cool, even during the summer months.
On one side of the preserve, there is a trail to Shoup Park, which has two play structures that you can visit and play on. If your little one is getting restless in the preserve, this is a great option! There are also bathrooms in Shoup Park, so you can easily run over there rather than using a porta-potty.
